Bookanista Review: Timepiece
Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 09:47AM My blogging this summer has been woefully lacking, I'm afraid. I was MIA once more on account of vacation...my baby bro got married this weekend!! Congrats to him and his beautiful bride! It was a wonderful wedding on a beach in Maine, with a tented reception, and boiled lobsters for dinner! Such a blast.
But now it's time to get down to business...with another Bookanista review!
This week I'm talking about TIMEPIECE, by Myra McEntire. This is the sequel to HOURGLASS, so if you haven't read that yet, get to it! :-)

I don't want to put up the description because I don't want to spoil any details for folks running out to buy HOURGLASS now, so I'll just jump in with my thoughts!
...Which, yeah, are going to be vague because I don't want to give anything away! ;-)
My Thoughts
This series is all about blending genres: time travel, scifi, adventure, romance...and Myra McEntire does a fabulous job getting the mix just right. It took me a few pages to get into TIMEPIECE because it picks right up in the middle of the action and it had been a long time since I'd read HOURGLASS, but once I'd refamiliarized myself with the characters and the world, I was caught up and enjoying the ride.
Where much of HOURGLASS is about discovery: things are happening to Emerson that she doesn't understand, and she slowly discovers the truth about her abilities and the forces around her, this second book is all about putting that knowledge to use...and finding out that the forces are larger and more complicated than she ever expected. I loved the action in this book - people DO things and DISCOVER things and make things happen. We get lots of character development too, and some new intrigues and mysteries to set us up for book 3.
All this to say, TIMEPIECE is exactly what a sequel should be. It builds beautifully from book 1, while still maintaining its own story arc. It didn't feel like "filler" or a placeholder until the "BIG" climax in the final book in the trilogy. It held its own as an entertaining, page-turning ride. And now I'm ready for book 3, because of course, it DID raise the stakes and give me lots of excitement and drama to look forward to!
LOVE this series, and I hope you will too! Check out HOURGLASS and TIMEPIECE at your local bookstore or library!
